  PENSION FILE for Richard McCloy: Certificate 60,615 Richard McCloy volunteered 9 Jan 1865 and enlisted 11 Jan 1865 in Brooklyn, New York. He was a private in Co. A. 10th regiment, New York Cavalry, 1st brigade, 2 division of Army of the Potomac. He gives his age as 18, born Scotland, 5' 2 1/2", fair complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair, occupation clerk, post office address New York City. Later descriptions gives his occupation as grocery clerk. Gives his birthplace as Near Glasgow, Scotland. His birth year is given in various places throughout the file as 1847, 1848 and 1851. He was wounded by a musketball through the left leg at Harpers Farm, Virginia 6 Apr 1865. His leg was amputated the next day. He was discharged 21 Oct 1865 in New Haven, Connecticut. His post office in 1866 was Care of E. A. Smith, New Haven, Connecticut. In 1870 his address was Ogden, Utah His 3 marriages and divorce are listed, as are births of 4 children. He lived in Larimer County, Colorado. In 1907 he was involved in a railroad accident and he lost his left arm below the shoulder. The accident took place near Poplar Bluffs, Missouri where he was living at the time. He was living in Lynn Haven, Florida in 1915. He was living in Morgan City, Louisiana in 1921 where he ran a second hand store. In 1922 he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana and then to Ponchatoula, Louisiana. He had no children living by 23 Feb 1927. At that time he said that he had lived in New York, Connecticut, Utah, Idaho, Missouri, Florida, Louisiana. He died 25 Mar 1931 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He names the following witnesses to prove his continuous residence upon, and cultivation of, said land, viz: William N. Bachelder, of Fort Collins, Colorado; William Miller, of Fort Collins, Colorado; Harris Stratton, of Fort Collins, Colorado." -Declaration of Richard McCLoy in second judicial district of Colorado territory in County of Larimer of his intention to become a citizen of the U.S. and renounce allegiance to Victoria Queen of Great Britain, dated 23 April 1881. He has built a log house 14 x 18 shingle roof board floor 2 doors and 2 windows. has built some fencing dont know exact, has built irrigating ditchs, the improvement are worth about 400.00. Last fall about 4 acres of the land was broken and he has broken more this spring. Believes Richard McCloy has acted in good faith. -Testimony of Witness William M. Miller, engineer of Fort Collins. Has known Richard McCloy about 3 years. believes him to be about 30 years of age. He is the head of a family consisting of a wife and one child. believes him to be a native born citizen. claimant first settled something over two years ago when he commenced buildling his house and breaking the land. He has built a log house 13 x 17 shingle roof board floor 2 doors and 2 windows built a corral. he has built 120 rods fo fence, consturcted irrigating ditches and owns stock to the amoung 240.00 in the irrigitating ditch covering the land. The improvements worth at least 400.00. Claimant first established residence on the land sometime in February 1879. about 20 acres have been broken and cultivated since settlement. believes Richard McCloy to have acted in good faith. -22 April 1881 Richard McCLoy purchased the lot n 1/2 of nw 1/4 of section no 26 in township 7 n of range 69 W of 6th P. M. containing 80 acres at the rate of two dollars and 50 cents per acres amounting to 200 dollars. -Cash Entry Land Office at Denver patent no 3297 June 1st 1882 Land Entry File patent 3115 Land Office Denver date 10-13-1891 -16 Oct 1890 in the Fort Collins Courier, a weekly newspaper, notice given that "Richard McCloy, homestead no. 5507, for the SW quarter of section 6, township 8 north, of range 68 west. He names the following witnesses to prove his continuous residence upon, and cultivation of said land, viz: James Hodges of Fort Collins, Colo., John Bee, of Fort Collins, Colo., John Cameron, of Fort Collins, Colo. R. Q. Tenney, of Fort Collins, Colo." -15 Oct 1890, Richard McCloy of Larimer County made homestead application no 5407 gives notice of intention to make final proof to establish claim on the land. -28 Nov 1890 deposition "Richard McCloy . . . says that he is the identical pesron who on Oct 24, 1883, made H. S. entry No. 5407 for the Sw 1/4 sec 6, T 8 N R. 68 W., and on this date offers proof for the same; that by mistake of the printer in publishing his notice of intention to make proof, the number of the entry is erroneously given no 5507 intead of no 5407; affiant, therefore, respectfully asks that this affidavit be accepted as an explanation fo the above discrepancy, and that the said mistake was in nowise the fault of this claimant, but of the publisher who published the same." -Final Certificate of Naturalization from Arapahoe County Colorado on 3 Dec 1890 in the county court of Arapahoe in the court house in Denver Richard McCloy became a naturalized citizen. oath of T. I am a naturalized citizen of U. S. Made homestead entry no 5407 at Denver Colorado land office on the 24 of October 1883. House was built October 1883 and established residence May 1884. Improvements Frame house 18x22 ell 10x12 ft. stone and lumber stable 12x30 ft. 12 acres fenced 2 B wire fence $750. Family consists of wife and 1 child. I was absent 3 months in spring 86 in insurance business unable to earn a living on the claim in spring 87 absent 3 months same business. My folks lived there while I was away and cultivated the land. Has cultivated 10 or 12 acres for 4 seasons raised corn and potatoes. Character of land is farming and grazing, sand loam grazing is most valuable purpose. I have no personal property elsewhere. -Final affidavit Richard McCloy has made actual settlement upon the land since May 1884 to present time.
