Hancock County, Illinois Settlements

As the Latter-day Saints came to Illinois in May of 1839 they settled in a pattern that Joseph Smith described as, "There is a wheel; Nauvoo is the hub; we will drive the first spoke in Ramus, second in La Harpe, third in Shokoquon, forth in Lima; that is half the wheel.  The other half is over the river."  The Saints eventually settled in at least seventeen communities in Hancock County besides Nauvoo.  They settled in at least ten communities in Iowa.  Some of these communities were already established but the majority were purchased, platted and settled by the Latter-day Saints.

In the future each of these settlement histories will be accessed by clicking on their name.  There are now links to Nauvoo, Ramus and Yelrome.
